pH is the -log of the hydrogen ion concentration in a water-based solution. The letters 'P' and 'H' stand for the 'Power of Hydrogen'. The power of hydrogen determines how acidic a solution is.

The 'P' represents the word 'potential' and the 'OH' represents hydroxide. OH- is the hydroxide ion. the pOH is the inverse log of concentration of hydroxide in a solution.
